Alethea Cox Selected as Direct Care Worker of the Year
Working with individuals with special needs has been a calling for Alethea Cox ever since she was a teenager. As a Behavioral Specialist at Lakemary, she works with some of the most vulnerable and high-needs children that come to us from all over the country, helping them achieve their behavioral, educational and treatment goals. We are pleased to announce that Alethea was selected as Direct Care Worker of the Year by The National Association of Private Special Education Centers (NAPSEC)!
NAPSEC is a nonprofit association that supports access to appropriate special education programs as vital components of the continuum of care. They are the only national association that exclusively represents private special education programs.
The Direct Care Worker of the Year award recognizes excellence and caring in meeting the needs of children and adults with special needs. “Alethea is exceptional in this role,” says Vice President of Children’s Services at Lakemary. “She works diligently to ensure success for all of the kids we serve. She treats each child as her own and is very vested in their progress. Her work and dedication enable children to successfully leave Lakemary with the skills and confidence needed to live as independently as possible.”
Throughout her tenure at Lakemary, Alethea has honed her skills, advocated for countless children and families, and emerged as a true leader in her field. “Alethea is a wonderful mentor to new staff members, and she is constantly sought out by her peers whenever unfamiliar situations or challenges arise. She considers nothing to be outside of her job scope and can always be counted on to do her best.”
Each year, NAPSEC accepts nominations from organizations all over the country recognizing staff who exhibit outstanding contributions and skills in various categories. This year’s categories included Educator of the Year, Related Service Provider of the Year, and Direct Care Worker of the Year. Alethea was submitted for the prestigious Direct Care Worker of the Year award, and her submission tied with one other for the top score, resulting in two winners that will share this distinction.
On Wednesday, January 22, Alethea was honored for her work and gave a powerful speech during a luncheon at the NAPSEC Annual Leadership Conference in Savannah, Georgia. Danielle Johnson, Executive Director/CEO of NAPSEC, said, “Alethea did a phenomenal job and I’m so thankful that she was able to make the trip to Savannah so we could honor her and her work.”
